Another type of science fiction books are comic books and graphic novels. While many of the works on this wiki are composed primarily of text, comic books and graphic novels mix illustrations with text. In doing so, they are able to create a world which in many cases is every bit as rich and compelling as traditional books and sometimes more so.

This page is devoted to what I consider to be the "best of the best" of comic books and graphic novels. Many of these works have some objectionable content but should be acceptable for most teenage readers.

Watchmen

This is probably familiar to many because of the recent movie release. Even if you have watched the movie, I would encourage you to check out the comic. While the movie was good, the comic is even better. Writer Alan Moore, illustrator Dave Gibbons, and colorist John Higgins create an intriguing alternate universe/superhero story in this 12 issue series. Regard by many as the greatest comic of all time, this series changed the course of forever through its complex characters, compelling situations, and dark humor.

Here is the movie trailer if you are interested:

Legion of Super Heroes in the 31st Century

Interestingly enough this is a comic book spin off of a television series. I was turned onto the comic after watching the television series with my nephew. This examines traditional DC comic book characters, specifically young Superman, in a different time period--the 31st century. The art style is very vivid and is clearly influenced by manga (Japanese comics). Highly recommended for youngsters!

Batman: Year One

Batman: Year One is an engaging retelling of the classic Batman story by Frank Miller. The art in this work is amazing as is the character development. Miller would go on to be known for his characters as a result of his work on this story.

Comic books for teens in High School include:

The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman
Ex Machina by Brian K. Vaughn
V for Vendetta by Alan Moore
Heavy Liquid by Paul Pope
