A book club is more than just reading and discussing a book. Enrichment activities not only further the topics and stories that have been read, but they can also create a fun, imaginative way to spark creativity in your book club group. Art projects, cooking lessons and costume parties are just a few of the things that will contribute to the enrichment of your discussions and will encourage participation from your group members.

Activities

Easy

Draw a character.
Have your club members choose a favorite character in the book you chose and give them the time and materials to draw their interpretation of what these characters might look like. If your book club takes place in the library or classroom, you may want to display their artwork for everyone to enjoy!

Illustrate a science fiction story.
Pick a favorite story by an author. Then create an illustration for that story. You may even want to illustrate your own original science fiction story.

Moderate

Animation
Use an online animation creator such as GoAnimate and have your club members recreate a scene or character dialog in the book you are discussing. 1288478635325.jpg

Cupcake Decorating
This activity will involve some advanced preparation. Using pre-baked cupcakes, supply your book club with the ingredients needed to design their own science fiction related cupcakes! Use characters from your current book selection to create imaginative, delicious masterpieces.

Costume Party!
After reading a sci-fi novel, ask your group members to design their own costume of their favorite character to wear at your next meeting.

Difficult

Science Fiction WebQuests
Take your group on an educational, virtual tour of sci-fi using one of these online WebQuest activities!

Fact vs. Fiction: A Science Fiction WebQuest
This WebQuest focuses on time travel. Perfect for an 8th grade group reading H. G. Wells' The Time Machine or any other time travel related science fiction story.

Alien Life-Form WebQuest
This WebQuest invites you to explore life on another planet. You are in charge of creating your own alien race. What does it look like? How does it survive? Who knew there was life on other planets?!?

Science Fiction Scavenger Hunt
Choose different elements from the story you have read. Design a library scavenger hunt which revolves around the book you have chosen. Create clues related to the book you have read that encourage participants to use library resources. Some examples of clues could be:

  • Find books on a certain planet or other location where the book takes place
  • Find a picture of a specific piece of technology, such as a rocket ship, space shuttle, or computer, mentioned in the book
  • Research an occupation found in the story
  • Locate resources describing plants or animals that are represented in the book

Predict the future. Explore the website called Everything I Know About Science I Learned From Science Fiction. Read a science fiction story or novel and learn more about the technology behind the story. Or, read a science fiction story written long ago and write about how the technology has changed since the story was written. Use Inspiration software to create a concept map of your ideas.
